Circa 2012, Ruan Liu Zheng a medical student has a massive crush on her teacher/adviser Ning Zhi Qian. She is like how most of us are – straight out of school. Never had a relationship, does not know how to process her emotions. She falls deeply for him. It breaks her heart when she realizes that he is dating someone else that he is very serious about. There is little she does to hide her emotions as her character is pure and without malice.

Ning Zhi Qain’s girl friend dumps him just before their wedding and Ruan Liu Zheng becomes his support for the heartbreak period. On one such occasion, Liu Zheng carries a drunk Zhi Qain home and chances to meet his mother.

His mother really likes her and suggests to him that he should think of marrying someone nice and stable like her. They get married. He has just joined his first job and she is studying to get into Medical Grad school. Her idea of a marraige is very romantic movie like. She cooks for him, cleans for him, takes care of him even when he does not want her to. He keeps insisting to her that she should focus on her studies but she makes trips to deliver lunch to him everyday without giving him any space. The relationship starts feeling laborious to him because in the middle of his very busy schedule he feels guilty of not being able to take care of her.

Despite that, the things that Zhi Qain has to accomplish in order to meet her expectations ( that she never communicates to him about) make him feel guilty of being the taker in their relationship.

After seven years, Ruan Liuzheng returns to the city she grew up in to train as a doctor in the Department of Neurosurgery. In order to stay at Beiya, she devotes all her energy to work. However, it's a little awkward that her ex-husband Ning Zhiqian also happens to be the best surgeon in the hospital. — After seven years, Ruan Liuzheng returns to the city she grew up in to train as a doctor in the Department of Neurosurgery. When he leaves for the US for his specialization, she is left behind in China. alone and thinking about him all the time for more than a year. She travels to the US to see him graduate and watches him smiling and happy at work with his achievements and the penny drops for her. He is not in love with her. He is happier without her and is devoted to his craft

In realization of this , she decides to walk away from him.

7 years later they meet in Africa for a medical emergency. She has been kidnapped by local militia and he goes to find and rescue her. As they start working together in Africa and then later as mentor and mentee back in China, they realize a new found understanding of each other. He realizes how well she understands him and his moods. She realizes how much he is invested in her and her career growth.

As they come closer to each other, Zhi Qain moves quickly to get back with her before someone else tries to date her.

A few things we really liked about this show.

Very mature perspective on relationships. Very clean, organic and very well written character arcs. You almost see the evolution of both of them separately and as they grow close to each other again. Their work is a glue to both of them and for the first time she understands how hard it must have been for him to balance her and a new job while being a neurosurgeon responsible for his patients.

He is still the moody person he was, she is still the soft, sweet person she was but they have grown in their understanding of each other. There are no bad people, there is no screaming, shouting or overtly dramatic characters. Just lives of these doctors and the ethics they show towards their work and each other.
