As the holiday season approaches, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has bestowed the prestigious distinction of being named on the 2024 Oscars shortlists to a select group of films across various categories.

Revealed on December 21, the annual shortlists span categories including International Feature Film, Documentary, Sound, Original Score, Original Song, Makeup and Hairstyling, Visual Effects, Live-Action Short Film, Documentary Short Subject, and Animated Short Film. This announcement comes nearly a month before the full Oscar nominations are set to be revealed.

Highly anticipated films such as “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Maestro” have secured their spots in multiple categories. Notably, “Barbie” leads with five shortlist nominations, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” follows with four, and “The Color Purple,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things” each received three nominations.

Additionally, the Ukrainian documentary “20 Days in Mariupol” and the Tunisian film about the ISIS narrative “Four Daughters” have achieved the remarkable feat of being shortlisted in both the International Feature and Documentary Feature categories.

Academy Award nomination voting runs from January 11 – 16, with the official nominations announced on January 23. Final voting will then run from February 22 – 27, with the 96th annual Academy Awards taking place March 10.

The IndieWire predictions for Best International Feature Film pointed to the festival circuit trajectories of “Fallen Leaves,” “Perfect Days,” and “The Zone of Interest,” which also features “Anatomy of a Fall” actress Sandra Huller.

The viral “Barbie” ballad “I’m Just Ken,” performed and co-written by actor Ryan Gosling, has been including the Best Original Song shortlist, alongside other “Barbie” tracks by Oscar-nominated singer Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa.

The Documentary Feature category has star power behind films like “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” and “American Symphony.” Meanwhile, there has been continued awards love for shortlist entries “The Eternal Memory,” “Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project,” “Four Daughters,” and “Bobi Wine: The People’s President.”
