83 IS NOT JUST A MOVIE IT’S AN EMOTION

BLUF

The film 83 commemorates India’s first-ever World Cup win in England. The movie theater feels like a stadium, and you leave feeling that you time-traveled to 1983 and you were a part of that victorious moment for the win that underdogs India pulled off.

THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES

The movie starts with a statement that lays its premise clearly laying out that some of the characters have been fictionalized and dramatized for the sake of the story. The 160 plus minutes of the movie are so engaging in the way it weaves a composition of Team India’s ride, effort, setbacks, inner clashes, individual failures, and most crucially, their enthusiasm to win for the country. Kabir Khan’s film is a character drama of evolution from individuality to a winning team.

IN THE KNOW

Ranveer Singh gets into the skin of Kapil Dev so much so that you feel it is the skipper himself. He brings to screen all the conviction and excitement leaving no stone unturned in imbibing the role at a cellular level.

The makeup, physical work, body language, dialogue delivery, game etiquette all are Kapil Dev incarnate.

The other actors are the real support for the movie. Each one of them has aced the team members that they play. You easily forget that it is a movie you are watching and not a cricket match.

Saqib Saleem playing Mohinder Jimmy Amarnath is charming. Tahir Raj Bhasin as Sunil Gavaskar, Jatin Sarna as Yashpal Sharma, Tamil actor Jiiva as Krishnamachary Srikkanth, Ammy Virk as Balwinder Sandhu, and Harrdy Sandhu as Madan Lal bring each of these legends to frame. You can see the effort, technique training, and mannerism of each one of these actors and know how much blood and sweat has gone into making this movie.

Deepika Padukone as Romy Dev has a short role.

Tripathi as PR Man Singh, the team’s manager aces it as usual.

Kabir Khan’s storytelling is impactful. He knows the nuances and the little details that make great emotional hooks and deliver the emotion perfectly. The cinematography, artwork, background score all fit the narrative to a T.
