NETFLIX BUYS MOVIE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS TO DEV PATEL’S MONKEY MAN FOR $30M

Slumdog Millionaire breakout star and last year, an Oscar nominee for Lion, Dev Patel is making his directorial debut with Monkey Man, inspired by Indian mythology.

Patel will star in Monkey Man, an action movie he co-wrote and will direct.

It follows the Kid, a recently released convict determined to start anew — by fighting for spiritual values in a corrupt and greedy world.

It’s to be his first feature as director. Patel wrote the movie with John Collee, who wrote the script to early 2019 Patel picture Hotel Mumbai, and Paul Angunawela of British comedy movie Keith Lemon.

Also on board are producer Basil Iwanyk and stunt production company 87Eleven, both of John Wick, as well as director of photography Chung-hoon Chung of original Park Chan-wook action thriller Old Boy and Stephen King adaptation It.

Netflix had struck an impressive $30 million deal for the movie distribution rights to Monkey Man, the directorial debut of Oscar nominee Dev Patel.

Currently, Monkey Man does not have an official Netflix release date, however, given that they completed filming the movie and entered post-production on March 12, 2021, we don’t think we have that much time left until the Dev Patel-directed movie reaches our screens.

According to IMDb, the movie is set to premiere on the streaming platform in 2022, however, a specific date has yet to be provided by the streamer. Our best bet is that the movie will be added to Netflix’s vast library sometime in the summer of 2022 at the earliest, or at the latest during the last quarter of 2022.

Stay tuned for an official release date!

The upcoming action thriller movie has a stellar cast attached. As well as directing, writing, and producing the project, Dev Patel, who is best known for starring in Slumdog Millionaire (2008) and The Green Knight (2021), will also star in the movie as an “ex-convict seeking revenge on those who wronged him in the past.”

According to IMDb, other actors attached to the project include: Sharlto Copley (Russian Doll)
Sobhita Dhulipala (The Body)
Brahim Chab as King Kobra (Finding ‘Ohana)
Sikandar Kher (Sense8)
Pitobash (Million Dollar Arm)
Vipin Sharma as Alpha (The Family Man)
Nagesh Bhonsle as Warden (Hotel Mumbai)
Joseph J.U. Taylor as Gerrard (The Singapore Grip)
Adithi Kalkunte as Neela (Hotel Mumbai)
Anup J. Patel (Nazar)

The movie will also introduce a few new faces to us too, which include:

Reva Marchellin as Hijra
Pehan Abdul as Lakshmi
Andres Levi
Alona Vykydanets as Miss Ukraine
Fahad Scale as Hijra
Jeremy Tauziac as Cartel Leader
Dayangku Zyana as Hirja

IMDb has provided us with a brief synopsis of what to expect from Dev Patel’s directorial debut, which reads:

“A recently released ex-felon living in India struggles to adjust to a world of corporate greed and eroding spiritual values.”
