BLUF:
Adapted from Venu Sriram’s Telugu film Middle Class Abbayi (2017), Nikamma, headlined by Abhimanyu Dassani
(Adi) and shot in Lucknow, the movie tries to be a meaningful commentary on the troubles that the rich and the powerful create for those who want to make an honest living in middle class anonymity in the small towns of India.
THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES
A Lucknow boy raised by his elder brother Raman (Samir Soni), Adi drifts away when his sibling marries the no-nonsense Avni (Shilpa Shetty). The new bride takes total control of the household and Adi takes no time to figure out that he has to shape up or ship out. He opts for the latter.
The police force and the administration are at the man’s beck and call until Bhabhiji Shilpa Shetty takes charge in the Regional Transport Office.
When a pretty girl, Natasha (Shirley Setia), enters his life and suggests marriage at first sight. Adi, unsure of the consequences of the dalliance, plays along until things begin to turn serious.
Then a gang of criminals led by an aspiring MLA Vikramjeet Bisht (Abhimanyu Singh) threaten to eliminate Bhabhiji, Adi turns into a one-man demolition squad, ready to do whatever it takes to protect his family. So not so Nikamma anymore.
Raman asks Adi to accompany Avni when she is transferred to a place called Dhaami as a regional transport officer. Bhabhiji makes Adi do all the household chores much to the lazy guy’s chagrin. Worse still, she confiscates a few of Vikramjeet’s cabs and refuses to release them despite threats,
Adi’s devar instincts kick in and he hovers around her to protect her around the clockattacks on her. The family drama and wannabe comedy then turns into an action flick.
IN THE KNOW
The movie just doesnt land. The dialogues are cheesy, the writing is lazy, Abhimanyu Dassani doesn’t impress but Karan Uncle will need to conduct a rescue operaton to bring him back from this disaster. Wanna bet?
The romance between his character and Shirley Setia’s is so pathetic that you could swear off 10 years off romance.
In her second come back movie, Shilpa looks fab but just does not get the meat to perform at all.
Not recommending this movie.
