Why did we keep thinking that Karan Johar might walk out of the woodworks in this show? No clue. But the format and narrative was indeed Joharesque, if that is a word.
Embellished by many real life bollywood biggies, Masaba x2 brings to life the life and times of Masaba Gupta with a sprinkling of the ordinal badasss diva Neena Gupta, her mother.
Masaba is a SoBo , privileged, millennial woman single after a failed marriage in search of meaningful life – both personally and professionally.
Neena fights frivolously against ageism and other such things while trying to appear in music videos and filling her calendar up.
Neena has revived her hit television show Fursat with her ex-flame Shekhar (Ram Kapoor), but is irked by the loss of creative control over her pet project.
We were more progressive in the old days, Neena tells Shekhar. Sure, he says, but everyone is progressive these days so we need to get traditional once again.
For all the hot looks and pwt disguised as chic, the show’s summary is a conversation between Masaba and her BFF Gia (Rytasha Rathore) where she tells Masaba that her kiss with Fateh is worse than her sleeping with him
Masaba’s publicist Nicole (Kusha Kapila) keeps reminding her to be the “kutti’ to get grav3yardgirl.
Masaba, who snoozes her dating life, is torn between the iffism of her investor Dhairya (Neil Bhoopalam). and man-meat Fateh (Armaan Khera) whose philosophy in life is to fill his existential void with over-priced collectible sneakers. He also happens to be marrying Masaba’s new client, the spoilt heiress Aisha (Barkha Singh) while declaring his love for Masaba on their way to the wedding in Kashmir.
Opps, actually Patnitop. Weird Fact: The flight takes off from Mumbai and takes them to Srinagar airport where Masaba and abba-zabba miss their connection to Jammu – since the wedding venue is Patnitop – 70 miles north of Jammu on the Srinagar- Jammu highway.
Funnily, while Srinagar airport is right next to the highway that goes to Jammu- Fateh and Masaba go 15 miles in another direction towards the lake instead – which has no connection to the Jammu highway.
Now, when they miss the flight so while flagging a bus from Srinagar to Jammu, the driver actually says – it doesn’t go to Patnitop !!!!!! There is one highway that connects Jammu to Srinagar – a dangerous one to that – and Patnitop is right on it – how could the writers botch such basic plot demographics??? No clue.

Masaba Season one needed to be about Neena, we wish this was too. That woman has a far more interesting life.
Sonam Nair returns as series director. She has also written the screenplay along with Nandini Gupta, Punya Arora and Anisha Raisurana. While the plot moves strictly on expected lines, the dialogue is colloquial, conversational and funny in parts..
Cameos by Kartik Aaryan, Milind Soman, Neelam Gupta and Bappi Lahiri remind us that for all their chaos, the Guptas are more than scene teen queenz.
The Kartik Aryan cameo was the most fun though.
