Kanan Gill is an Indian comedian best known for Comicstaan and his YouTube presence. He returns to the comedy scene with his special “Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill.” It begins with a dragged out description of Indian vs Western culture which is supposed to be self-deprecatingly funny but sounds kind of like that cringey uncle who thinks he’s cool because he lives in the US but actually only hangs out with Indians.
The main premise of the show is a formal letter that he wrote to himself at age 15 for what he hoped his life would be like, a great premise and a hilarious throwback to anyone who’s heard about the Indian education system. Point one of the letter is accompanied by a hilarious story about his health issues and finding a hernia but the rest of the show is extremely hit or miss.
It’s mired in nostalgia, most of with Gill pulls off with his schoolboy humor and punchy charm but definitely gets old after a bit. Moreover, the constant deviation is annoying and by the end, no one cares what was actually in the letter. He touches on serious issues like depression and suicide, but most of his punchlines here fall flat. None of his jokes particularly resonate.
It seems that he’s lost some of that snarky spark that made him such a hit. In his own words, this show was more time pass than pass time. Laugh away your quarantine blues by binge watching his Pretentious Movie Reviews series on YouTube instead.
