BLUF:
A Ranveer Singh Fangirl and a tourist spot dancer from Rajasthan agrees to be a surrogate for an American couple. The social, psychological, and emotional implications of her decision only seep in when the couple decides they do not want to keep the baby at the first instance of the fetus detecting a probable down syndrome condition.
THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES
Based on an acclaimed Marathi film ‘Mala Aai Vhhaychy!’ by Samruoddhi Porey, Mimi is cleverly tailored by Laxman Utekar. Screenwriter Rohan Shankar makes sure that the Hindi version has its own personality and uniqueness while preserving the soul of the original.
The combination of situational comedy may overgeneralize surrogacy in the earlier scenes but is successful in not trivializing the issue or make it look inconsequential.
Utekar amuses but not at the cost of forfeiting substance. The characters are beautifully laid out and even when the story is predictable, you want to see the arcs evolve. Flawlessly vacillating between drama and comedy, without losing its grasp over the narrative. Mimi is one heck of a story told.
FWAR
Kriti Sanon must be welcomed in the “brilliant actor” category with her ability to carry a film like this on her own. Her performance as Mimi is par excellence.
Pankaj Tripathi is magnificent as usual. The perfection of his comic timing, rage, tears and dialogues is what makes Mimi such an endearing watch.
Manoj Pahwa, Supriya Pathak and Sai Tamhankar are successful in their substantial roles. Evelyn Edwards and Aidan Whytock are thankfully not linearly portrayed and therefore, the story walks itself away from stereotyping.
AR Rahman’s music is ethereal and does justice to this story of motherhood.
