BLUF
Toofan is the rags to riches story of Aziz Khan, a street side ruffian who used to work as a collection agent for a local mobster. Ajju, as he is called is a golden hearted Aziz Ali AKA Ajju Bhai is a hoodlum who operates as an enforcer for Jafar Bhai, a local mobster alongside his friend, Munna. One day, when he goes to visit his trainer friend, he happens upon a boxer who is training. His friend introduces him to the world of boxing through Muhammad Ali videos and he gets addicted. Aziz now wants to be a boxer, but he must prove himself to Nana Prabhu, a famous boxing coach.
MEAT AND THE POTATOES
Ajju finds his “path” to redeem himself from his chosen path and a coach to train himself. He meets a doctor, who he falls for and who turns out to be the daughter of his coach, much to the chagrin of the coach. His lady love inspires him to become a renowned athlete. Then to impress his lady love, he does something that will make him despised in the eyes of people, his coach (teammates and peers, if he has any) and his lady love. He is banned from practicing boxing by the Indian Boxing Federation for the next five years and loses his dignity as a boxer. His lady love forgives him and marries him nevertheless and they have a daughter together. Five years later, she motivates him to restart professional boxing. She loses her life in a bomb blast while getting home from the Federation with his license, becoming a catalyst for him to train hard for a comeback to professional boxing and to an eventful victory. That islamophobia angle is a bit of an overkill and just does not fit into the narrative at all.
FWAR
Paresh Rawal ‘s Coach Nana Prabhu is the highlight performance of the movie. Farhan Akhtar’s body is the other stellar to die for watch. There is absolutely no chemistry between Mrunal Thakur and Farhan. The boxing scenes are well done, and the cinematography is great. The music is a miss and in a Farhan Akhtar movie that is a big disappointment.
