AYUSHMANN KHURRANA’S DOCTOR G HITS THE RIGHT NERVE

Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Shefali Shah, Rakul Preet Singh, Sheeba Chaddha and Abhinay Raj Singh
Director: Anubhuti Kashyap

It’s an Ayushmann Khurrana movie so what are you expecting ? A protagonist with a problem .

Bang on .

Dr Uday Gupta (Khurrana) wants a career in orthopaedics but given the low rank that he secures in the entrance examination he lands a seat in the gynaecology department of a Bhopal medical college and hospital. He grudgingly accepts the slot hoping to use the placement as a stopgap arrangement while he prepares for another calculated go at what he really wants.
As the solitary male in an all-woman section, Uday is up against not only a bunch of girls who are no mood to roll out the red carpet but also his own biases and misgivings.

However , the problem is not with the protagonist alone but the the bias is with the society around him too.
In one of her opening scenes Shefali Shah’s character who is the head of the gynaecology department of the Bhopal Institute of Medical Sciences, Nandini Shrivastava says to him – A doctor is a doctor. Lose the male touch .

That is easier said than done for a man who has never felt the need to challenge the status quo. He is conditioned to believe that only a female is adept at being a gynaecologist.

Doctor G enmeshes humor into the drama of Dr Uday’s life , his relationship with his tinder-bound mother ( Sheeba Chaddha) and his tenant friend
In the course of his acceptance of the fact that Gynecology could be a plausible career choice for him, Uday’s character undergoes a lot of evolution because of the women around him – his infatuation with a co-worker, his mother and the underage girl-friend of his married, older idol cousin.

His disinterest turns into an opportunity as he starts getting involved with his patients and his co-workers. As he works with them, he is not only forced to re-evaluate his own thinking but also make an attempt to stand up for others.

His long time college sweetheart tells him, ” You do not listen to women.” So true of many men who do inadvertently stop listening once a woman talks. As he gets hit by assertive women with minds of their own, including Dr.Fatima ( Rakul Preet Singh), who he falls for, he starts realizing how wrong he has been in addressing people and relationships around him.

The two characters that leave a lasting impression are Dr Nandini (Shefali Shah) and Uday’s eccentric mom Shobha (Sheeba Chadha). Shefali shows her prowess as the strict disciplinarian , the head of department of Gynaecologist and mentor, the latter steals the show every time she is on the screen. In fact, Sheeba Chadha is the MVP of the film as a mother who has a life of her own, a tinder profile and a youtube life. As Shobha, she has managed to project vulnerability, comic timing and emotion all at the same time. That’s no easy feat! She takes positive charge in the second half and drives the plot to its conclusion.

The movie effectively deals with issues like brutality/violence against doctors and stigmas around female health in India very efficiently without making a sermon out of it.

But why there needed to be an item song at the end beats us.

Overall, watchable and funny. In theaters now, Will stream on Netflix soon.
