Now made as a short-documentary, The Elephant Whisperers by Kartiki Gonsalves that explores the relationship between a family of three, Bomman, Bellie, and Raghu, an elephant calf, living in the heart of the Theppakadu Elephant camp at the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. The film follows their lives through the changing seasons of the forest, highlighting the bond that develops between Raghu and his caretakers, and also raising important points about the human-animal conflict.
Bomman and Bellie belong to the indigenous Kattuanayakan tribe, and their lives revolve around the forest, where their ancestors worked to protect it. The film reveals how they live off the forest while protecting it, which is also evident in their role in taking care of Raghu, an injured baby elephant separated from its herd. The documentary is narrated by Bomman and Bellie, who offer a personal account of their lives and Raghu’s story, making it a poignant tale of the bond between humans and animals.
Anthony’s deep connection with these majestic animals shines through in every page of this book, as he shares his insights into their behavior and emotions. His vivid descriptions of the elephants’ playful antics, their displays of empathy and loyalty, and their deep bonds with one another will leave listeners with a newfound appreciation for these intelligent and sensitive creatures.
The Elephant Whisperers is an immersive experience that highlights the symbiosis between nature and man. Gonsalves’ camera quietly observes the family’s daily routine without disrupting their personal space, which creates an intimate and immersive experience for the viewer. The film also addresses the issues that led to Raghu losing his mother, seamlessly weaving humans’ tampering with nature into the narrative.
I think this film is highly important for everyone to watch. This film teaches us a lot about the relationships people can have with animals and the work that goes into preserving the lives of already scarce animal species. On top of that, we learn that Bomman and Bellie become the ‘first couple to successfully raise two orphaned elephants in South India’ when Raghu gets a new sibling in Ammu, another orphaned elephant calf. Many films and documentaries are being made with the emphasis on conservation, and with all that is going on in the world I believe this relationship depiction is just what we needed on the screen.
“The Elephant Whisperer” is a must-read for anyone who cares about wildlife conservation and wants to learn more about the complex social lives of elephants. Lawrence Anthony’s legacy lives on through his inspiring work, and this book is a testament to his dedication, compassion, and love for the animals he devoted his life to protecting. The film has been shortlisted for the 95th Oscars in the Documentary Short Film category.
