Summary
The first episodes of the second half of the South Korean drama, Island were recently released this past week. The latest episodes pick up with Johan (played by Cha Eun-Woo) recovering from his reunion with his long lost older brother, Guntang returning to kill Mi-Ho, and Mi-Ho working to unlock her past life’s powers. More importantly, the latest two episodes of the series provide some much needed detail and perspective on the various characters’ pasts.
The majority of episode 7 goes back in time to when Van and Wonjeong were younger. Not only does it show how much Wonjeong genuinely cared about Van and vice versa. Additionally it also highlights the complex relationship between Van and his “brother” Guntang. Although they were both subject to abuse disguised as “training”, Van and Guntang have very different outlooks on life. Van hopes to experience human emotions and protects humans from lust demons, while Guntang distrusts all humans and kills any humans who are at the scene of a lust demon’s attack. The brothers are ultimately divided in beliefs as Van attempts to save Wonjeong from Guntang’s attack.
After seeing her friend’s life and happiness fall apart after a lust demon’s attack, Mi-Ho vows to channel her previous life’s memories and unlock Wonjeong’s powers to protect humanity. Determined to limit her distractions, Wonjeong begins a regimented training and is closely watched and protected by Van and the duo slowly grow closer as they continue to spend more time together.
Thoughts
In my opinion, the latest two episodes of Island were critical in understanding and connecting the entire plot line. The drama provided some much needed clarity by going back in time and showing Wonjeong, Van, and Guntang’s complicated pasts. The question of Guntang’s rage and disappearance was finally answered and creates additional tension to the plot. Although one question about Guntang was answered, the drama craftily added more curiosity after revealing a mysterious group of villains “pulled” Guntang from the darkness in order to kill Mi-Ho and establish a new world order.
I am excited to see how Van, Mi-Ho, and Johan will protect the universe from this evil, mysterious group. Watch the latest episodes every Friday and Saturday on Amazon Prime!
