BAFTA WINNERS: ‘OPPENHEIMER’ AND ‘POOR THINGS’ WIN BIG

“Oppenheimer” dominated the BAFTA Awards, securing accolades for director Christopher Nolan and lead actor Cillian Murphy, along with the prestigious Best Film award.

The film achieved a remarkable haul of seven golden BAFTA masks, while “Poor Things” followed with five victories.

BAFTA chair Sarah Putt inaugurated the event at the Royal Festival Hall in London, greeting the distinguished attendees, among them Prince William, who attended alone as Catherine, Princess of Wales, was recovering from surgery at home. Prince William, serving as BAFTA’s president, refrained from speaking, possibly due to the heightened public interest in his personal life after the recent cancer diagnosis of his father, King Charles III. David Tennant kicked off the ceremony with a humorous pre-recorded sketch based on his “Staged” series during the lockdown, featuring Michael Sheen and Sheen’s dog, Bark Ruffalo, along with cameos from celebrities such as Tom Hiddleston and Judi Dench. Tennant, sporting a kilt and accompanied by Bark Ruffalo, delivered a lighthearted joke about the evening proceeding more smoothly than Ken’s chest, a nod to Ryan Gosling’s character in “Barbie.”

The evening saw notable presenters, including David Beckham, who awarded the golden mask for Outstanding British Debut, and Dua Lipa, who presented the award for Outstanding British Film.
