BLUF:
Ganga Ram Chaudhary in Dasvi is chief minister of a north Indian state. His wife Bimla Devi manages their home and cattle, treats him with reverence and is so intimidated by him that her voice is a near-whisper in his presence.
Ganga is sent to judicial custody while a scam is being probed. Confident that he holds his wife, the demure but evolving Bimla by ” a remote control”, he appoints her as the CM in his absence.
Contrary to his expectations, Bimla changes once she gets a taste of power. And the arrogant Ganga’s clash with an incorruptible jail superintendent results in him returning to his school books – he studied up to Class 8 as a child, and now decides to study for his Class 10 exams.
THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES
The film is set in a fictional state of Hamit Pradesh. Ganga Ram Chaudary(Abhishek Bachchan) is a corrupt Chief Minister who is sent to jail for an educational scam. His wife, Bimla Devi(Nimrat Kaur) takes uphis post in a la Lalu Yadavesque plot and starts ignoring her husband, almost wishing that he stays in jail. If this was not enough, the jail superintendent, Jyoti Deswal, ridicules Ganga Ram for being a corrupt and uneducated. Upset with this, Ganga Ram challenges Jyoti that he will complete his standard 10th education. But this comes with a condition that if he fails to clear the exam, he won’t take the chair of Chief Minister again. What happens then is the premise of the story.
IN THE KNOW
We have always maintained that Abhishek Bachchan is perhaps one of the most underrated actors in Indian cinema. He comes through as the rustic uneducated Ganga Ram like no one else. The scenes between him and Nimrat Kaur’s Bimla Devi are comedy gold. Yami Gautam stands her ground as an actor and creates space for herself as the cynical Superindent of the Prison.
The various other actors fill in their characters extremely well. The writing is great with some really great dialogues The score, editing, production design are all excellent.
The movie is a tad bit long.
The similarity of the screenplay to the story of an Indian politician and his wife from bihar is quite apparent throughout the movie.
Abhishek Bachchan is the real star of this movie and it remains one of his best performance till date.
