FABULOUS LIVES OF BOLLYWOOD WIVES

BLUF

A Kardashianish attempt at chronicling the lives of four middle-aged women who are either actresses from yesteryears or wives of people in the Bollywood film business with an advertisement for Qatar Tourism on plug conveniently.

Karan Johar puts it succinctly – Why the f should I watch a show about four women who don’t have jobs? Don’t watch it I guess.

Why are these pre-menopausal women getting on my nerves? F you. F you.

That in essence is the soul of the show.

THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES

Neelam Kothari, Maheep Kapoor, Seema Khan, and Bhavana Pandey’s reality show seems scripted in many parts.

They do have jobs, by the way, it Is funny that Karan Johar ( the producer of the show feels they do not) Kothari, the 1980s star who appeared in a string of Hindi films with Govinda, now runs a jewelry design store and is married to the actor Samir Soni. Pandey, the wife of actor Chunkey Pandey and mother of upcoming talent Ananya Panday, has a  prêt label. Maheep Kapoor, a one-time model wedded to actor Sanjay Kapoor, also has a bauble business. Seema Khan, the spouse of director and occasional actor Sohail Khan, owns a clothing boutique. The show chronicles their lives through their very scripted squabbles, career moves, the high society they move around in, the interpersonal loud communication, and their girl holidays.

With Karan Johar – coffee with KJO styles interventions included. The best of the series is the last episode with Shahrukh and Gauri Khan. It was very emotional to see the superstar wear his heart on his sleeve.

IN THE ZONE

To create a scripted show must have been difficult, the dialogues do not feel scripted but the narrative gives the viewers an insight into the homes of these people, their lifestyles, hopes, aspirations, and the commitments they make in supporting each other in a bubble where not a lot of people can be trusted. What comes out of the show is a positive kindness that the entire fraternity that is in business together has in the camaraderie that grows as they move around in the bubble they operate in.

Maheep is loud, bullying and very nasty, Bhavna is more grounded, Seema is fiery with no handle on her behavior and Neelam is very sweet yet very careful about a 25-year-old baby doll image she left her fans with. Is this a competition to American reality shows -far from it, but definitely a plot to the evolution of plot of the Coffee with Karan Series?

FWAR

Engaging in parts, profane, loud, and sometimes the scripting shows- but has some endearing components.

WHAT WE LOVED: Shahrukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Chunky Pandey, and his real self, Neelam in her sweetness, her misfit husband Samir Soni and the camaraderie between people in a space where they are public commodities yet find safe spaces with each other because they only have each other to huddle with.

WHAT WE MISSED: Some Real Reality
