CAST: Idris Elba, Archie Panjabi, Neil Maskell, Eve Myles, Christine Adams, Maxton Beesley
DIRECTOR: Jim Field Smith
Penned by George Kay and helmed by Jim Field Smith, “Hijack” showcases a departure from Idris Elba’s usual roles, as he portrays a peacemaker willing to go to any lengths to rescue individuals. This includes employing deception to make the team of five hijackers, led by the subtly menacing Stuart (portrayed by Neil Maskell), believe that he is in league with them.
Idris Elba, who not only stars in the film but also serves as an executive producer, portrays Sam, a corporate negotiator on his way back from Dubai to London. However, his journey takes an unexpected turn when a group of armed thugs hijacks the flight.
The hijacking scenario appears to follow the typical pattern: demanding the release of two dangerous convicts from prison under the threat of killing passengers. Haven’t we seen this before in Liam Neeson’s 2014 film “Non-Stop”? Indeed, we have. However, the writers skillfully introduce a twist by addressing the issue of global corporate toxicity, adding a fresh layer to the story.
The responsibility of unraveling the situation falls on the ground crew. Archie Panjabi, an Emmy winner for her role in “The Good Wife,” delivers a standout performance as a no-nonsense counterterrorism expert. Equally impressive is Eve Myles a British air traffic controller, exuding a quiet authority that allows her to challenge obnoxious bureaucrats. Elba captivates us without the need for melodrama. It’s enjoyable to witness his well-timed comedic moments, often at the expense of stubborn passengers who refuse to listen. Moreover, it’s tremendously thrilling to watch him navigate the plane with physical grace and unwavering determination, outsmarting terrorists, brushing off interference, and rallying everyone to think before they act.
As tension mounts in the air, the lives of both passengers and crew hanging in the balance, pandemonium ensues on the ground, from Dubai to London. Politicians engage in a blame game, passing responsibility back and forth. Representatives from various countries contemplate the drastic measure of shooting down the plane as it enters its airspace. Meanwhile, the criminal masterminds, meticulously plan their next moves. The gears of the intricate plot continue to turn, unfolding in real-time.
Eve Myles soon finds herself thrust into the heart of the danger, where she remains throughout the ordeal.
When the moment arrives, Sam discreetly passes a note around the plane, bearing the words: “Get ready to shake things up.” And shaken you will be. This ticking-clock thriller means business, constantly springing surprises that catch you off guard. So fasten your seatbelts for a riveting ride.
This gripping and adrenaline-fueled thriller engrosses you from the start, thanks to a truly remarkable performance by Idris Elba, a bona fide star who commands the screen with his magnetic presence. “Hijack” relies on Elba’s exceptional talent to captivate the audience.
