Kapil Sharma’s show on Sony is funny. Sometimes laced with roasts of actors, it is scripted, well developed, and has a structure.
Even in his most repartee moments, Kapil Sharma can induce laughter with his smart quips. His Netflix show that is titled “ I’m not done yet” is not funny.
There are a few palpable jokes, but apart from that humor, the entire sequence of almost an hour of storytelling could have just been the story of his life from anonymity to such success.
For the regular viewers of the variety show, this will indeed be disappointing if they were expecting a gag-filled performance. In his stand-up avatar with just his craft, the stage, and the mike, it’s just Kapil and his words.
The storytelling is engaging and the stories are the ones he will tell his grandchildren. We will remember them but we miss the humor, the repartee, and the comebacks that make comedy special.
Don’t miss that the seating of the audience is not the regular, not your regular stand-up formation. Instead, the audience is seated on circular tables as they would at corporate events, and that makes you think if Kapil was not meant to do comedy at all but it was just a celebration of his life’s journey that we were witnessing.
Kapil is honest and very endearing. He even acknowledges that he is in a playhouse he hasn’t been in before. That honesty makes him instantly likable. His back and forth with his wife in the audience, his explanation of why he agreed to do a Netflix special, all hit home with his extremely endearing demeanor.
His honesty about his weak hold on English and his lovely stories of his struggle is a window into what makes this guy so special. He is real. He is humble and he has not forgotten where he came from. His very touching story about his father and that song he sang ends the special in a way where he paid homage to his father who is now no more.
