KYA MERI SONAM GUPTA BEWAFA HAI FEELS IRRELEVANT

Cast: Jassie Gill, Surbhi Jyoti, Vijay Raaz, Surekha Sikri

Director: Ssaurabh Tyagi

BLUF: Based on a real-life story, this movie is about Sonam Gupta, who is a broad-minded, modern girl who refuses to keep dating a guy for reasons she tells him “you are small”. He thinks she means in the small member department but what she really meant was in his capacity to think big. The man is so aggrieved that he writes on a Rupee 10 note “ Sonam Gupta bewafaa hai” or “Sonam Gupta is disloyal.”. This became an international viral meme and affected the life of every girl who was named Sonam Gupta

THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES

Sintoo falls for the town’s diva Sonam. When Sonam reciprocates her feeling, Sintoo is left confused. But when she finally rejects him after getting to know him a little better, he feels belittled and defames her as payback for her rejection.

A chain of events occurs when a note with “Sonam Gupta bewafa hai” goes viral. This happened in 2016/ 2017 and a lot of us still remember how it was easy to judge and malign women who exercised their right to choose.

Having thought that the woman refused him for his mini-me, the man tries to get treated for his apparent loss of manhood, only to later realize that the girl meant something else.

TVF the channel on Youtube produced a series of videos and broke the taboo about talking about things like this that really mattered.

How many women like Sonam Gupta, who exercise their right to choose their partners to undergo ostracism by the society and they must deal with the ego of the men they refuse.

A few e-commerce apps and cafes soon began to cash in on the social-media fixation. Raasta, a resto-bar at Hauz Khas Village in Delhi, offered 10% discount and a free dessert for all Sonam Guptas, while The Chatter House, a pub with several outlets in Delhi, offered a Rs 1,000 meal voucher as well as a #SonamGuptaCocktail. Here are some snippets of people who had opinions about a woman expressing her desire not to be with someone she didn’t feel attraction for.

IN THE KNOW

Despite such a statement movie to present and direct, there is much that the makers leave on the table in the technical department.

The camerawork of the film makes the film look set in older times than 2017 when the incident occurred. Same with Jassie Gill’s looks.

The writing is lazy, and the screenplay is very jaded. The interesting story is told through characters that do not have an arc at all.

The songs and the score is very mediocre except the “Le Kar Pehla Pyaar” remix. Where the story could have made a strong statement about how lives can be destroyed by men who cannot control their ego trips, the story doesn’t really touch that topic or explore the agony of Sonam Gupta.

This story fails at execution.
