Main Cast: Lee Da-Hee, Choi Si-Won
Overview
Love is for Suckers is a South Korean drama following the 20-year old friendship between Goo Yeo-reum (Lee Da-Hee) and Park Jae-hoon (Choi Si-Won). Yeo-reum is a variety show production director who is incredibly dedicated to her work. Given that Yeo-reum is 37 and not yet married, she is desperate to find love and subjects herself to heartache as she continues to date men who do not have marriage in mind. Her best friend Jae-hoon is the complete opposite of Yeo-reum. Jae-hoon is a plastic surgeon who has very little interest in his work and love life and mainly prefers playing video games at the local Internet cafe in his free time. Despite his mother’s attempt and scheming to get him to attend blind-dates, Jae-hoon makes it very clear that he is uninterested in getting married.
Like any pair of best friends, Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon are inseparable and actually live together, albeit on separate floors of the house. Whether it be eating out or splitting the local convenience store’s 1+1 deals, Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon are always doing everything together. The drama follows their friendship and the lengths that they’re willing to go to make each other happy, as well as their multiple failed attempts to end up together.
Later in the drama, Yeo-reum’s ex-fiancee,Kim In-woo, suddenly returns to Korea and asks Yeo-reum to marry him. This sudden return makes Jae-hoon unexpectedly realize that he may have romantic feelings for Yeo-reum. Yeo-reum also finds herself wondering if her heart belongs to the former love of her life or her constant best-friend, Jae-hoon.
Later on in the drama Jae-hoon eventually stars in Yeo-reum’s latest variety show, Kingdom of Love, a dating show notorious for its vulgar scenes and chaotic drama. However, much to his surprise he meets Han Ji-yeon on the show. Previously Ji-yeon had pursued a relationship with Jae-hoon but he politely rejected her due to his feelings for Yeo-reum. Given that each member of the show must pick someone to date each week, it will be interesting to see how Yeo-reum and Jae-hoon’s friendship will navigate the drama and relationships forged during in Kingdom of Love.
Thoughts
Although only 8 episodes have been released, I really enjoy watching this drama. Honestly, I love the chemistry between Jae-hoon and Yeo-reum. You can tell they genuinely care for each other and it’s evident with the crazy things they do. Beneath his cold and indifferent demeanor, you can easily notice how much Jae-hoon cherishes Yeo-reum and how he he is willing to drop everything for her. Between their constant jests and jabs at one another, there is definitely a spark between these two and they’re destined to be with each other. Which makes their constant roadblocks and deviations from being a couple even more frustrating! But I have faith that in the end they will end up together and finally get the happily ever after they both deserve.
I also love the outfits in this drama. Yeo-reum’s fashion sense is impeccable. It’s the perfect balance of fitted yet boxy outfits and she definitely pulls off the monochromatic look. And although Jae-hoon dresses like a bum 95% of the time, whenever he puts effort into his wardrobe, he looks incredibly handsome and well-put together!
