Revenge of Others: A Dark Yet Thrilling Revenge Tale

Main Cast: Shin Ye-eun, Park Solomon, Seo Ji-hoon, Chae Sang-woo

Summary

Revenge of Others is one of the newest South Korean thrillers following the revenge stories of two high schoolers, Ok Chan-mi (played by Shin Ye-eun) and Ji Soo-heon (played by Park Solomon).

Despite being adopted and separated at a young age, Chan-Mi still kept in regular contact with her twin brother (Park Won-seok). After suddenly learning that her twin brother committed suicide, Chan-Mi transfers to her brother’s high school to unearth the truth behind his death. While at the new high school, Chan-Mi slowly begins piecing together her brother’s life and quickly realizes that she did not know him as well as she thought. Although she is a member of the shooting team, Chan-mi faces many challenges while adapting to life in Seoul as she struggles to make friends and trust her classmates. Eventually she befriends Ji Soo-heon and slowly become allies as they investigate her brother’s death.

Although Soo-heon is popular due to his easy-going exterior, he struggles in private as he works multiple part-time jobs to support his ill mother residing at the nearby assisted living home. In the first episode he is also diagnosed with a brain tumor and has an expected 6 months left of his life. Soo-heon turns to darker and more violent methods to make money and begins to target school bullies to ensure that he will be able to provide for his mother in the future. As the drama dives deeper into Soo-heon’s background, it provides additional explanation for why Soo-heon is so willing to avenge the victims of school bullies.

Thoughts

With 10 episodes released, Revenge of Others does not disappoint and is one of my favorite dramas to watch each week. The series does a phenomenal job at adding mysterious twists and turns as more and more characters are woven into the series. As I continue to watch the drama I can’t help but question everyone’s intentions and if they are actually telling the truth or manipulating each other.

A few episodes in, Seok Jae-beom (played by Seo Ji-hoon) and Gi Oh-sung (played by Chae Sang-woo) are introduced. Jae-beom is repeating his senior year after losing his memory in a terrible accident 6 months ago. Oh-sung is the police chief’s son and is assisting Jae-beom as he re-experiences his senior year. Chan-mi slowly pieces together that Jae-beom and Oh-Sung were close friends with her twin and begins to suspect them of playing a role in his death. However, as the drama continues Jae-beom begins to suspect Oh-sung of manipulating him and his memories as he grows closer to Chan-mi and Soo-heon. The four students’ interactions and attempts to “trap” one another in a lie only add to the tension and depth of the drama. By the end of each episode I am left holding my breath wondering if Chan-mi and Soo-heon will successfully outmaneuver their adversaries.

I also really enjoy the dynamic between Chan-mi and Soo-heon. It’s cute and entertaining to watch their friendship develop as they rely on each while enduring never-ending challenges. There are also multiple moments where Chan-mi suspects Soo-heon. However, despite being scrutinized and being held at gun-point one time, Soo-heon always manages to forgive Chan-mi and the pair always grow closer.

Overall, I would highly recommend watching Revenge of Others!

New episodes are released on Wednesday on Hulu and Disney+.
