BLUF:

Steve Carell’s comedy series about the antics of the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces, the United States Space Force, is back. Season 1 ended on a dramatic note, with the team stuck on the moon after their rivals in China’s Space Force completely destroyed the American base. With such a cliffhanger finale, fans were no doubt wondering how Captain Angela Ali (Tawny Newsome) and her crew would survive such an ordeal.

Space Force 2 focusses  on the aftermath of the team’s mission on the moon, and is set three months after the climax of Season 1. General Mark Naird (Carell) will try to deal with the consequences of his actions and his decision to go against an order to start a war with Chinese forces on the moon.

THE MEAT AND THE POTATOES

This season, Naird dealS with office politics and corruption among the white-collar officials. The cliffhanger from last season with the Chinese-American issue is quickly resolved and then paves way for other issues.

Space Force Season 2 builds an Office Type story and sets the story on a solid track to become a long-running sitcom. Infact it is funnier, and has more meat not only in the military work zone, but also in the characters’ private lives. The show seems to have committed to its main cast, even saying goodbye to subplots of the first season very deftly It’s committed to being a season for the fans, showcasing Dr. Chan and Captain Angela’s covert exploits, weaving Ben Schwartz’ Tony into the story, setting up Diana Silvers’ Erin Naird more concretely.

Season 2 sees the entire Space Force team building interpersonal relationships as Naird juggles budget cuts and negotiating over some functions of the Space Force branch.  Angela struggles with upheaval after her trip to the moon, Tony and Chan take their relationship to romance, and Erin lands an internship at Spaceforce providing earth like experiences to Astronauts at the Space Station like waving branches of trees at them from the control room and literally being the one whose opinion is highly disregarded.

IN THE KNOW

Season 2 is a very smart correction to Season 1. Ben Schwartz knew exactly what the audiences liked in the first season and focussed on just those elements in Season 2. Apart from smart writing, the story moves to the territory that Steve Carell is most comfortable with – an Office albeit in the US Govt space; which gives the characters so much meat to work with and builds upon their personal stories.

In a matter of a few hours and  seven 30-minute episodes, you will start investing in the characters more than you did in Seaon One d in the characters and then no spoilers her but watch out for  eye-popping season finale.

WHAT WE LOVED:

The smart story

The characters

Just the speed and the humor

WHAT WE MISSED
