On June 13, 1997, a tragic fire at Uphaar cinema in Delhi resulted in 59 deaths. Neelam and Shekhar Krishnamoorthy, whose own children were among the victims, created an organization to support those affected by the tragedy. The fire was caused by lack of emergency systems, blocked and locked doors, and no support from staff who had fled the premises. The incident came to be known as the Uphaar tragedy.
