It’s the season for Zhou Yiran and he impresses the hell out of us – in “You are Desire” and now in “When I Fly Towards You”. He definitely caught our attention as the spirited Ai Jia from ” Falling into Your Smile”, giving established heartthrobs like Xu Kai some screen presence competition. And here he is again, making our hearts flip with his dimples.
In this series, Zhang Lu Rang, despite his impeccable academic credentials and a backdrop of privilege, is a layered individual. To the world, he presents a façade of confidence, but beneath the surface lies a tumult of self-doubt.
The shadow of his prodigious younger brother, Zhang Lu Li, looms large, thanks to their mother’s constant comparisons. For years, Zhang Lu Rang has retreated into a protective cocoon, appearing reserved and distant to the outside world, a defense mechanism developed over years of living in his brother’s shadow.
Yet, a transformative chapter unfolds in Zhang Lu Rang’s life with the introduction of the vivacious Su Zai Zai and their tight-knit circle of friends, which includes Gu ran, Guan Fang, and Su Zai Zai’s confidante, Jiang Jia.
This newfound camaraderie guides Zhang Lu Rang on a journey of self-discovery, helping him navigate the complexities of life and identity. As the group pursues their individual aspirations, romance subtly threads its way through their intertwined lives, forging bonds and understanding.
While falling under the familiar banner of Coming Of Age School Drama, this series distinguishes itself by avoiding the trappings of overwrought plot points. Instead of relying on unwarranted separations or irrational character decisions purely to stoke conflict, its standout feature lies in the characters’ mutual trust. They remain unfazed by external forces trying to sow doubt, a refreshing deviation from the common pitfalls in dramas of this ilk.
Misunderstandings? Yes, they’re present, but they mirror the inevitable and authentic misunderstandings of real life. “When I Fly Towards You” introduces them not as major plot disruptors but as believable life scenarios that audiences can relate to.
This drama serves as a cozy watch for those seeking uplifting content, ensuring a flow of positivity and resolutions. The wholesome nature of the show, combined with characters who steer clear of being excessively cheesy or cringe-inducing, truly sets it apart. It’s an impressive accomplishment in storytelling.
In many series, we often find ourselves solely invested in the primary couple, leaving side characters or relationships on the periphery of our attention. However, this drama defies that trend entirely. Each character arc piqued our interest, with some even surpassing the allure of the main storyline.
It’s commendable how the narrative steered clear of clichéd misunderstandings, draggy plots, or inauthentic dubbing. Instead, real voices brought authenticity, making the experience incredibly immersive. For us, this drama was near perfection.
The ensemble of friends is a genuine delight. Their camaraderie reflects the playful teasing yet deep loyalty of real friendships. They are the quintessential bunch who jest at every opportunity but stand like a rock during adversities. Their dynamics are so true-to-life, resonating deeply with viewers.
Guan Fang, with his comedic undertone, doesn’t drastically impact the central plot but his bond with Grandma Guan is touching. Their moments, like the play rehearsal at Guan Fang’s residence, exude warmth and humor.
Gu Ran & Jiang Jia’s arc might seem predictable, but the charm lies in its presentation. Though initially unimpressed, we found ourselves gradually getting invested in their journey. It was familiar yet fresh.
Zang Lu Rang & Su Zai Zai – the heart of the drama. Their chemistry easily made them my top pairing of 2023. Zang Lu Rang, with his introverted demeanor and Su Zai Zai’s vivacious spirit, created a magical juxtaposition. Their relationship progression was a masterclass in nuanced storytelling, unfolding organically and resonantly. The absence of unnecessary conflicts and Su Zai Zai’s proactive approach to resolving issues kept their romance grounded and authentic. Their shared moments were a treasure trove of endearing moments, consistently lighting up the screen.
And did someone say Su Zai Zai? Zhang Miaoyi is perfect as the cutie pie who talks with her eyes and has the most sincere smile in the whole world. She is tone deaf to how embarrassingly openly she pursues Zhang Lurang and protects him and their relationship fiercely.
For those seeking a heartwarming romantic drama, replete with solid character development and engaging storytelling, or simply a light-hearted binge-watch, this is an absolute must-watch.
