Summary
Divorce Attorney Shin is the latest South Korean drama out on Netflix. The drama follows the story of Shin Sung-Han (played by Cho Seung-Woo), a talented divorce attorney with a mysterious past. Although his name means “sacred” in Korean, Sung-Han attended law school much later than his peers. Prior to his law career, he was an impressive pianist who lived in Germany, however he suddenly returned to Korea and began studying law and eventually specialized in divorce.
Although the drama subtly alludes that his decision to focus in divorce law is a result of his childhood, Sung-Han stands firm while defending his clients in their respective cases. Even if the odds are stacked against him and the initial outlook of his case looks grim, Sung-Han always seems to find a unique solution to ensure that his clients win and get what they want. However, given the emotional nature of his line of work, Sung-Han also offers sympathy and support to the clients as he advocates for them in court.
Despite being a classically trained pianist, Sung-Han is constantly listening to trot music and finds great joy while hanging out with his friends Jang Hyeong-Geun (played by Kim Sung-Kyun) and Jo Jeong-Sik (played by Jung Moon-Sung). Although they are all in their 40s, the trio of friends definitely keep each other young and add some much needed comedic relief to the show!
Thoughts
Only the first two episodes of Divorce Attorney Shin have been released on Netflix, however the initial episodes were captivating. The cases that Sung-Han covers are emotionally complex and interesting as it displays how divorces involve and impact more than just the two individuals filing for divorce. I also really enjoy how Sung-Han empathizes with his clients and is motivated to search for the truth in his clients’ cases. Although he attempts to act cool and composed, it’s endearing to see him genuinely care about them when they’re not there.
Additionally, I enjoy the friendship that Sung-Han, Hyeong-Geun, and Jeong-Sik all share. Although it’s a little funny and incredibly awkward to watch the three of them sing and dance around, you can definitely tell that they care about each other as they bicker and joke at each other’s expense. In the second episode, Hyeong-Geun and Jeong-Sik invite themselves over to Sung-Han’s apartment and the three end up having a spontaneous karaoke night to trot music. The scene suddenly cuts to an elderly couple walking along the street and watching the trio’s silhouettes jump and dance around and they discuss that maybe that’s why Sung-Han is still single and unmarried.
I would highly recommend watching Divorce Attorney Shin on Netflix! New episodes are released every Saturday and Sunday!
