The story is set in colonial-era Punjab, where Jeona Maurh is forced to pick up the gun to avenge his bandit brother, Kishna’s death. Along with seeking vendetta against Dogar, another dacoit who betrayed Kishna, Jeona is determined to demolish the exploitative land tax mafia that runs in cahoots with the Indian kings and Britishers. The film ends with Jeona taking a leap of faith off a cliff from Naina Devi’s temple, after being surrounded by the British forces.

“Maurh” presents a  powerful depiction of Punjab’s famous Robinhood figure. The film’s visual metaphor, set against the wasteland of Punjab, paints a vivid picture of the barren lives of the villagers. The performances, especially by Ammy Virk, are a spectacular testimony to the pure intensity and authenticity of the art.

The director, Jatinder Mauhar, and the cinematographer should be credited for recreating the notoriously wasted desert of Punjab, with a sandy wash to the screen and earthy shades that pull the narrative sharply into focus. The film’s costumes and production design have attention to detail and historical accuracy.

However, the film is not without its flaws. There is a lag in the screenplay and a lack of depth in character emotions. The slow pace in the first half and inconsistent writing and direction is where the film could have been improved.

Although the adaptation is mediocre, Ammy Virk’s dazzling performance elevates the historical drama.

“Maurh” is a compelling historical drama that brings to life the legend of Jeona Morh. With strong performances and a visually striking depiction of Punjab’s landscape, the film offers a gripping tale of revenge and justice. While it may suffer from some pacing issues and inconsistencies in writing, it stands as a testament to the growth of Punjabi cinema and is worth a watch for those interested in historical dramas and period pieces.
