At first, he does not recognize her as she scams him for money on arrival at the airport. Later, he acknowledges her as one of his students at the Friendship Hospital set up for medical help of locals in Lacaya. Yunzheng is curious about her situation as he sees his previous student spend her time doing odd jobs and dubious transactions. After she assists him in translating medical terms to the local doctors, he employs her as a French - Chinese translator at the hospital.Yunzheng gets carried into Weian's life, her relationships with locals, and he starts understanding the local life a little better. However, he is still intrigued with Weian's life and choices and keeps trying to figure her out. In China, Yunzheng's brother Du Yun Cheng is involved in drug discovery and is working to ensure his new drug for Huntington's disease hits the market. The backstory is not entirely revealed yet, but it seems that his family is less appreciative of him since he did not become a surgeon.
It seems that Du Yun Cheng has also been in love with Weian, who had refused him in college. The secret that Weian is hiding is that she discovered that she has a rare disease called Huntington's just before her final exams in Medical school and dropped out of school. Huntington's disease (HD) is an inherited disorder that causes nerve cells (neurons) in parts of the brain to break down and die gradually. The disease attacks areas of the brain that help to control voluntary (intentional) movement, as well as other areas.
In various conversations, it is also revealed that Yunzheng's mother had also practiced in Lacaya as a volunteer doctor. As Yunzheng sees more of the odd Weian, he becomes obsessed with discovering more about her and getting close to her.
